'Be My Baby' The Ronettes' singer Estelle Bennett dies 67

Estelle Bennett (July 22, 1941 - February 11, 2009) was a member of the girl group The Ronettes, along with her sister Ronnie Spector and cousin Nedra Talley. After the Ronettes' 1966 break-up, she recorded a single for Laurie Records, "The Year 2000/The Naked Boy". She then quit the music business and had rarely been seen since. She got married (last name Dong) and raised a family.

In 2007, when the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she refused to perform with them, and spoke only a brief two sentences during her acceptance speech, "I would just like to say, thank you very much for giving us this award. I'm Estelle of the Ronettes, thank you."

Re: 'Be My Baby' The Ronettes' singer Estelle Bennett dies 67

Sweet, gentle Estelle loved everything about being a "Ronette" and was content to live in her sister Ronnie's shadow, because even in the shadows, there is still some spotlight. Always fragile, after Ronnie married their crazy producer, Phil Spector, and he forced the group's break-up, she slipped further away as solo fame eluded her. Suffering from schizophrenia and anorexia, she is homeless for a time. Unable to perform at the group's 2007 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, she is nonetheless thrilled and happy to be there. Original Ronettes, Ronnie and Nedra Talley-Ross perform together for the first time in 40 years, to a standing ovation. “Estelle had such an extraordinary life,” Ms. Talley Ross said. “To have the fame, and all that she had at an early age, and for it all to come to an end abruptly. Not everybody can let that go and then go on with life.” She is singing with the rest of the angels now. RIP, Miss Estelle....you are missed here.
