Reni Santoni, Actor, ‘Seinfeld,’ ‘Dirty Harry,’ Dies 81

Reni Santoni (April 21, 1939 – August 1, 2020) was an American film, television and voice actor. He was noted for playing Poppie on the television sitcom Seinfeld. He also played Chico González in Dirty Harry.

His first leading role was as a young actor in Enter Laughing. He went on to play Inspector “Chico” González in the 1971 film Dirty Harry. His character uttered the memorable phrase, “No wonder they call him Dirty Harry; [he] always gets the shit end of the stick”. Other film roles included Carl Reiner’s comedic homage to the film noir genre, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982), as prison official Ramon Herrera in Bad Boys (1983), and as Detective Tony Gonzales in the action film Cobra (1986).

Santoni made guest appearances on television shows such as Barnaby Jones, Lou Grant, Hawaii Five-O, Hardcastle and McCormick, Hill Street Blues, The Odd Couple and Midnight Caller. In 1973, Santoni played a junior partner on Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law.

Santoni died on August 1, 2020, at a hospice in Los Angeles at the age of 81. He had several health issues during his last years, including battling cancer. Santoni passed away from natural causes.

Alan Parker, Director, ‘Midnight Express,’ ‘Mississippi Burning,’ ‘Fame,’ dies 76

His films won nineteen BAFTA awards, ten Golden Globes and six Academy Awards.

Sir Alan William Parker CBE (14 February 1944 – 31 July 2020) was an English filmmaker. His early career, beginning in his late teens, was spent as a copywriter and director of television advertisements. After about ten years of filming adverts, many of which won awards for creativity, he began screenwriting and directing films.

Parker was known for using a wide range of filmmaking styles and working in differing genres. He directed musicals, including Bugsy Malone (1976), Fame (1980), Pink Floyd – The Wall (1982), The Commitments (1991) and Evita (1996); true-story dramas, including Midnight Express (1978), Mississippi Burning (1988), Come See the Paradise (1990) and Angela’s Ashes (1999); family dramas, including Shoot the Moon (1982), and horrors and thrillers including Angel Heart (1987) and The Life of David Gale (2003).

Bent Fabric, Pianist, ‘Alley Cat,’ Dies 95

Bent Fabricius-Bjerre (7 December 1924 – 28 July 2020), better known internationally as Bent Fabric, was a Danish pianist and composer.

He is best known for his 1961 instrumental “Omkring et flygel” (literally, “Around a Grand Piano”) which became a hit in Denmark. The song was re-released worldwide under the name “Alley Cat” on Atco Records the following year, and went to #1 in Australia and #49 in Germany. The tune also became a hit in the United States; the song hit #2 on the AC chart and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the LP of the same name hit #13 on the Billboard 200. “Alley Cat” also won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The follow-up single, “Chicken Feed”, hit #63 in the U.S.

Tracy Morgan Divorcing After 5 Years of Marriage

Tracy Jamel Morgan (born November 10, 1968) is an American actor, voice actor and comedian best known as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (1996–2003) and 30 Rock (2006–2013). He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2009 for his work on 30 Rock. He has appeared in numerous films as an actor and voice actor.

Morgan and Wollover married on August 23, 2015. Morgan filed for divorce July 2020.

While in high school, Morgan married his girlfriend Sabina in 1987 and have three sons together. Morgan filed for divorce in August 2009, after having been separated for approximately eight years.

In September 2011, on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards, Morgan announced he and model Megan Wollover had become engaged six months earlier in San Francisco. Their first child, daughter Maven, was born in New York City on July 2, 2013.

John Saxon, ‘Enter the Dragon,’ ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Actor, Dies at 83

John Saxon (born Carmine Orrico; August 5, 1936 – July 25, 2020) was an American actor and martial artist who worked on more than 200 projects during a span of 60 years. Saxon is known for his work in Westerns and horror movies, often playing police officers and detectives.

Saxon was a teen idol.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he established himself as a character actor, frequently portraying law enforcement officials in horror movies such as Black Christmas (1974), Dario Argento’s Tenebrae (1982), and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

In addition to his roles in horror movies, Saxon co-starred with Bruce Lee in the martial arts movie Enter the Dragon (1973), and had supporting roles in the westerns Death of a Gunfighter (1969) and Joe Kidd (1972), as well as the adventure thriller Raid on Entebbe (1977). In the 1990s, Saxon occasionally appeared in movies, with small roles in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994) and From Dusk till Dawn (1996).

Dame Olivia Mary de Havilland DBE (July 1, 1916 – July 25, 2020) was a French-British-American actress. The major works of her cinematic career spanned from 1935 to 1988. She appeared in 49 feature films, and was one of the leading actresses of her time. She was also one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood Cinema, until her death in 2020. Her younger sister was actress Joan Fontaine.

De Havilland first came to prominence as a screen couple with Errol Flynn in adventure films such as Captain Blood (1935) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). One of her best-known roles is Melanie Hamilton in the film classic Gone with the Wind (1939), for which she received her first of five Oscar nominations, the only one for Best Supporting Actress.

Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac co-founder, dies 73

Peter Green (born Peter Allen Greenbaum, 29 October 1946 – 25 July 2020) was an English blues rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. As the founder of Fleetwood Mac, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Green’s songs, such as “Albatross”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Oh Well”, “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)” and “Man of the World”, appeared on singles charts, and several have been adapted by a variety of musicians.

Green was a major figure in the “second great epoch” of the British blues movement. B.B. King commented, “He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats.” Eric Clapton praised his guitar playing; he was noted for his use of string bending, vibrato, and economy of style.

Rolling Stone ranked Green at number 58 in its list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. His tone on the instrumental “The Super-Natural” was rated as one of the 50 greatest of all time by Guitar Player. In June 1996, Green was voted the third-best guitarist of all time in Mojo magazine.

Regis Francis Xavier Philbin (August 25, 1931 – July 24, 2020) was an American media personality, actor, and singer, known for hosting talk and game shows. Having been called “the hardest working man in show business”, Philbin holds the Guinness World Record for the most hours on U.S. television. His trademarks included his excited manner, his New York accent, his wit, and his irreverent ad-libs.

Philbin gained his first network TV exposure in 1967 as Joey Bishop’s sidekick on The Joey Bishop Show. Philbin is most widely known for having been the co-host of the New York City-based nationally syndicated talk show Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee starting in 1988, which became Live! with Regis and Kelly starting in 2001, and continued with former football player Michael Strahan after Philbin’s departure in 2011.

Philbin debuted and hosted the US version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Million Dollar Password, and the first season of America’s Got Talent.

On July 24, 2020, Philbin died of natural causes at the age of 88, one month before his 89th birthday.

Philbin had an angioplasty in 1993. On March 14, 2007, he underwent triple bypass surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center because of plaque in his arteries. Prior to the surgery, Philbin talked with David Letterman, for whom Philbin had substituted on Late Show with David Letterman during Letterman’s own quintuple bypass surgery. Following Philbin’s successful heart surgery, he returned to the show on April 26.

On December 1, 2009, Philbin had hip-replacement surgery. He returned on Monday, January 4, 2010, to his regular hosting duties. In May 2010, Philbin underwent surgery to have a blood clot removed from his calf. He returned to work the next day.

Conchata Ferrell, Berta, ‘Two and a Half Men,’ on Respirator

Conchata Galen Ferrell (born March 28, 1943) is an American actress. Although she has been a regular castmember of five TV sitcom series, she is best known for playing Berta the housekeeper for all twelve seasons of the sitcom Two and a Half Men.

In June 2020, Ferrell suffered a heart attack. In July of the same year, she was moved to a long term care facility where, as of July 16, 2020, she is stable and semi-conscious.

As of July 17, 2020, she had been placed on a ventilator; not related to COVID-19.
