Magic Johnson HIV

Magic Johnson discovered that he was positive for HIV in 1991 (physical before the 1991–92 NBA season).  He made a public announcement on November 7, 1991.

We all thought it was a death sentence for Magic Johnson.

As of now, Magic Johnson's HIV virus is at undetectable level. (he's not virus free).  Magic Johnson doesn't have AIDS. Magic Johnson is not cured from HIV.  Magic Johnson still has HIV virus.

Magic Johnson is not the only person living healthy life with HIV.

The key point was that the virus was detected very early.  And he took very strong medication.  With early detection & drug treatment, a patient has 90% chance of holding down HIV virus.

Magic Johnson announces retirement Nov 7, 1991

Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr. (born August 14, 1959) is a retired American professional basketball player who played point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After winning championships in high school and college, Johnson was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Lakers. He won a championship and an NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in his rookie season, and won four more championships with the Lakers during the 1980s. Johnson retired abruptly in 1991 after announcing that he had contracted the HIV virus, but returned to play in the 1992 All-Star Game, winning the All-Star MVP Award. After protests from his fellow players, he retired again for four years, but returned in 1996, at age 37, to play 32 games for the Lakers before retiring for the third and final time.

Re: Magic Johnson HIV

650 t-cells is a good safe number, but not really a very good one, hope he reaches over 900t-cells that will keep him really safe from most of the problems relatade to aids.

Re: Magic Johnson HIV

There may not be a "cure" but finding out early in your contracdting this disease can really help. Obviously it also depends on the strain and strength of the virus. I believe I got a mild version of a strain that killed the lying man that gave it to and his wife (who is also deceased). Healthy living, positive attitude, multitude of vitamins/minerals etc, faith, support from family and friends and learning to love and forgive myself has allowed me to raise my 10 year daughter to adulthood, see her graduate from high school, college, marriage and now the bitht of my new grand son. If someone contracts a strong viral strain they can be gone in a few years, however, there are lots of us out there who have been around a while. It will be 19 years for me in November and my t cells are around 650, never been on meds. At age 59, I DO expect to live out my normal lifespan. I have hope and know the power of God.

God bless you!!!!! I hope you

God bless you!!!!! I hope you stay healthy and live a long, wonderful life!

Re: Magic Johnson HIV

Magic is living proof that Peter Duesberg is right: HIV does not cause AIDS.

Re: Magic Johnson HIV

I did something sexually stupid, one time. Are there any signs to let me know if I have contracted HIV?

not easy

HIV is not that easy to contract unless there is blood involved. Go get tested....that is the only way to know.

Re: Magic Johnson HIV

Get tested immediately!! what in the world are you waiting for? I found out I was HIv positive within two months of contracting it and almost 19 years later I am still Aids free. i have the HIV virus, viral load extremely low, never been on medication. Why, who knows but finding out very soon after contracting it made a great difference. I was alcholo and drug free at the time and continued for several years. I took vitamins, minerals, aloe vera, vinegar, acupuncture, and massage. Everything I could do to reduce stress. What are you waiting for? It does not have to progress to Aids. Get going.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

I've been living with HIV for over 17 years. My infection, like Mr. Johnson's, was caught early. I started treatment about 15 years ago when my T-cell count dropped below 500 (that was the recommended standard of care at that time). My Viral Load had approached 50,000 copies at the time. So, for the entire 15 years or so of treatment, my viral load, with the exception of 2 minor "blips", has been "undetected". My T-cell count rebounded to over 500 quite quickly, and steadily rose over the next several years into the 800's and then over 1000 (for many years now typically between 1000 and 1100). I assure you I'm not wealthy (not by American standards anyway), living paycheck to paycheck and often being flat broke well PRIOR to that next paycheck. I am fortunate in that I have health insurance. More so than that I think, people need to realize that to be HIV+ in America is a very diffeerent experience than being HIV+ in most parts of the world. I'm fortunate. Even without health insurance, you can get help here. I don't even really have to take THAT many pills. Four pills a day for the HIV actually. But the meds can cause other issues which you need to take other meds for. So on top of the 4 for HIV, I take one for blood pressure, one for cholesterol, one for acid reflux, and one for the anxiety I get every time I stare down the fistful of pills I have to take. There is a concern now that, either directly due to HIV or from the powerful medications, people may tend to experience health problems associated with aging sooner than they normally would. That too can be combatted with proper diet and excercise and.... MORE PILLS. I'm a pretty typical American HIV case...

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

God bless you. I contracted sometime between Sept and Nov 1992. Was tested mid November and started a serious helath regime. My t cells were around 800 at the time but have stayed close to 1000 all these years accept my last test which was 650. I just relocated from Calif to Florida and have a new grandson so I am sure that affected my stress level :). I have slacked off of some of the positive behavior I exhibited earloy in my HIV adventure (relapsed several years with alcohol and other drugs). That is behind me now. i also researched and discovered the importance of vitamins, minerals, aloe vera, acupuncture and massage therapy. Continue those to this day. Would choose never to use meds but we will see. it will be 19 years in November. God bless you.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

God Bless you!!! Stay positive and continue to live a healthy life!!!

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Pun intended!

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Yikes, I don't think s/he meant it that way. :(

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

If a cure was to be announced then everyone everywhere would be on equal ground, the WHO would then become involved because there is a cure and as such advocate human rights, don't believe me look what happened to polio, mumps and rubella! Of course then unlike now, it was about the wellbeing of society (world society) and not about the almighty dollar, yen, euro, etc. Just take a look at which country has the most infected per capita and then take a look at their respective GDP. All things being equal, the US per capita has a low rate and we have one of the world most populated countries. I think HIV/AIDS is very real, not psychosomatic at all...the larger question is where did it come from EXACTLY!

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

My father has been living with HIV also for 18 years. He has been taking his medication (more than 30 per day at the beginning and just 5 now ) during all that time. What has helped his condition get better is taking care of himself, positive thinking, his medication and beiong extra careful. His T-cell count is below 50, which is really good. He doesn't get special treatment or free medicine. I think that Magic could do some sort of public awareness regarding HIV and the importance of protecting yourself, that could get a certain message across young people who now think that HIV isn't an STD and don't realize the impacts of living with it.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

um dont u mean viral load is 50 t-cells are what u want to high . when i was first diagnoised my viral load was 210,000 now im undectable take 3 pills a day for my hiv and my tcells are over 500 . im glad ur father is doing well and hope i didntoffend u with my question ..

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

He did a whole movie about it that was on vhs. It might be on DVD now. I watched it in high school over 11 years ago.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

God bless your father. Thank you for visiting.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

I rarely hear of people living long, healthy lives with HIV or are able to stop it from turning into AIDS. I am suprised at how long Magic has lived and how healthy he appears. I think it's b/c he does have money to pay for the meds to keep him healthy. I hear they are expensive and I am sure he gets the best treatments. I don't think it's fair that many other people don't get the same privilege to have access to the medical help they need to live long and healthy lives simply b/c they can't afford it. After all these years I feel that little improvement has been made in this fight, however if someone has the money then the outlook is better but it is also important that people realize they have better chances of living longer and being healthier if it's caught early so it is important to bring awareness so people get tested regulary. I don't feel Magic has done his best at his efforts to find a cure or bring awareness. I feel there is so much more he could do. This isn't something from my viewpoint that he seems passionate about.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Bro, life isn't fair. What's not fair about a man who worked his butt off to become a basketball superstar? He earned his money. He didn't steal it. Why should it all fall on his shoulders just because he's rich? That's ridiculous socialistic nonsense. I think you must have no idea how many multiple millions of dollars goes into researching cures for diseases and the countless hours that scientists put into their research. What could really help facilitate the discovery of new treatments and cures for various diseases are more powerful supercomputers. That's because they are capable of running massive simulations and decoding genes and proteins. This helps the researchers to better understand the genetics of the viruses and help them to find cures more efficiently. :)

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Magic Johnson probably has a genetic mutation that alters HIV's binding abilities making him less susceptible to full blown AIDS. The medications for HIV now are better than in the past, but this is still a terminal disease that causes people to die prematurely from a variety of infections. 90% of people with HIV DO NOT remain AIDS-free even with the top of the line treatment. If you do not know something about a disease, please stop posting false information. Young adults are still dying from AIDS, and misleading posts on websites is not helping the situation.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Nearly 90 percent of the people who take the powerful drugs within a few months of being diagnosed HIV positive have undetectable levels similar to Johnson's condition, said Dr. Jeffrey Laurence, an AIDS researcher at Cornell Medical Center and a consultant to the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

As someone living with HIV for 21+ years, I can say I know something about it without fear of contradiction (with the obvious exception of the willfully obtuse). Having seen many people die as much from the "powerful meds" as from "complications" (code, at the time, for opportunistic infections), I decided to wait it out, until I went full-blown (received an AIDS diagnosis- until a few years ago, this was a white (T-cell) count of 400 or less; it has since been lowered to 200) to go on meds. I'm still waiting. Now, before you jump on my case about being irresponsible with my "health," you need to know that I AM being monitored (how else would I know I don't have AIDS yet?), and despite my best (read: most reckless) attempts (early on) to "hasten the inevitable," and my "What's the point?" attitude (I'm still working on changing that one), I'm still here, alive and (otherwise relatively) well. Of course, going into virtual "hermit mode" and avoiding "hooking up" for a number of years probably helped too. -Imp Teaser

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

I can say the same thing to you. I am only relaying information I hear from major news media. If you know more about HIV then feel free to step up (or give us a cure).

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Can somebody please help my brother help himself.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

there is no known cure yet for HIV. he is probably getting something just to strengthen his immune system. Cure? i dont think so. the difference with him and ordinary people is: he gets special attention and we dont. Get real!

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

Magic has the money for the medicine, he does not get special attention from any one.

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

If it is true and there is a cure and he had just the right money to pay, why is it that the rest of the world that do not have that type of money, get the same treatment. Why are not medications that he receives available to the world? Magic Johnson seems like a person that is giving and caring, does he have these meds in clinic's that he deals with? How can we get our questions answered?

Re: Magic Johnson's HIV

get real, there's no money in a cure and that goes for every illness
