Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Jones dies at age 90

Jennifer Jones (March 2, 1919 – December 17, 2009) was an American actress. A five-time Academy Award nominee, Jones won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Song of Bernadette

Death of Jennifer Jones
Jones enjoyed a quiet retirement in Southern California close to her son. She granted no interviews and rarely appeared in public. She died of natural causes at her home on December 17, 2009, aged 90

Jones married Selznick on July 13, 1949, a union which lasted until his death on June 22, 1965. After his death, she semi-retired from acting. According to media reports, Jones attempted suicide in November 1967 by jumping off a cliff; she was hospitalized in a coma before eventually recovering. Her daughter, Mary Jennifer Selznick (1954–1976), committed suicide by jumping from a 20th-floor window on May 11, 1976. This led to Jones' interest in mental health issues.

Robert Walker did not sign with Selznick. M-G-M signed him. He came to the movie-going public's attention in "See Here, Private Hargrove," and as a doomed young soldier in M-G-M's "Bataan" starring Robert Taylor. Selznick perversely cast him as Jones's love interest in "Since You Went Away" even as the Jones and Walker's marriage was dissolving and Selznick was courting the actress. Jones and Walker had two sons who were born before she was signed by Selznick. Little known: She had tried to succeed in Hollywood once before, in the late 1930s, under her birth name of Phylis Isley, and made a few B-pictures, including a Western with John Wayne. In spite of this, her performance in "Song of Bernadette" was often spoken of in the press as her first Hollywood film--which it wasn't. She was known at the time as one of Hollywood's most publicity hating personalities. She was directed by some of the biggest names in the business, including William Wyler, Henry King, Ernst Lubitsch, John Huston (twice), Michael Powell, and Vittorio DeSica, though often in films that were not among their best.

Re: Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Jones dies at age 90

I thoroughly enjoyed the work of this actress, especially her performances in "A Song Of Bernadette" and "The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit". I just find it strange that her first husband, Robert Walker (whom she had two sons with) is never mentioned. Both Jennifer and Robert at one time were signed with Selznick. However, Selznick became obsessed with her and literally lured her away with the promise of a career, fame and fortune. After Robert completed his final picture "Strangers On A Train" he wasted away. Some say from a broken heart as he never got over losing her. Anyway, suffice it to say, I sincerely hope Mr Selznick, Mr Walker and Ms Jones have found solace and are R.I.P. just my 3cents...eenie

I didn't know she was still alive (although she was listed at "Over 90" list).

She is a Hollywood legend - a true diva.
